High Holiday SongAt Shaarei Shamayim our High Holiday services are participatory, with the main services within a traditional framework. Rather than having a choir that would perform for the congregation, we have developed a core group of singers who lead and support the community throughout the High Holiday Services, and a number of individuals who take various lead roles. Our music draws on many traditions; High Holiday nusach (traditional melodies developed for particular services), Chassidic, contemporary, folk traditions, and classical composers are all part of our repertory. We try to continually learn and expand our knowledge base, and have annotated sheet music and produced a learning CD. We practice throughout the summer in preparation for the fall holidays. Community members who want to become familiar with the music but do not want to actually become song leaders are welcome to attend practices. If you are interested in joining us, please contact the High Holiday Song coordinator.
