Social Action Potlucks

Once a month we come together to talk about and reflect upon doing the work of social justice. Many of our members have done or currently are engaged in the work of tikkun olam – repair of the world. These Shabbat potlucks give us an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this work, as well as to discuss the particular challenges that arise from it.

We begin each evening with a Shabbat potluck, which gives us an opportunity to meet new people and connect with familiar faces. During dessert, one person from the community speaks for 15 minutes about his/her work or an idea related to social justice work.

Past discussions include:

• creating tzedakah collectives
• sorting through the complexities of community organizing
• avoiding burnout
• working for reproductive choice from a faith perspective
• fighting global warming
• visiting the Jewish community in Cuba
• engaging in activism vs. direct service
• bringing together labor and religious communities to fight for workers’ rights
• incorporating Judaism into the approach and content of the work.
