Social Action Organizer
Position Description
Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, a progressive Jewish community in Madison, seeks a Social Action Organizer to work with our volunteers and community partners. For 2025, our Social Action Committee will focus efforts on community work to support refugees and immigrants.
This position is a temporary (about 5 months), part-time contract position. Hours are negotiable. Compensation is $8,000.
The Social Action Organizer will work with the social action committee, our rabbi, staff, and congregational leadership to do the following:
Volunteer Coordination: Recruit and engage volunteers to participate in advocacy, education, and direct service.
Action Group Leadership: Organize and manage volunteer action groups focused on:
-- Advocacy (e.g., policy engagement, letter-writing)
-- Education (e.g., Know Your Rights workshops, cultural events)
-- Direct Services (e.g., transportation, childcare, mentorship)
Partner Engagement: Further develop and support CSS liaison and engagement activities with:
-- Voces de la Frontera
-- Jewish Social Services
-- Open Doors for Refugees
-- Community Immigration Law Clinic
Newsletter Support: Assist the bi-weekly digital social action newsletter writer.
Fundraising Coordination: Recruit volunteers to lead fundraisers (e.g. house parties) for our partner organizations.
Social Action Planning: Develop a plan that ensures the long-term viability of our work.
Qualifications
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
- Familiarity with Madison Jewish community life preferred (Jewish identity not required)
- Must be available for hybrid work, including in-person meetings and events
